Research Activities:

Remote Sensing Systems, Scientist, 1998-Present

 

Calibration, algorithm development, and validation of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI), Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer - Earth observing system (AMSR-E), and Visible and Infrared Scanner (VIRS). Research into the upper ocean thermal structure: empirical and physical models of diurnal warming. Research into modification of SST by Tropical Cyclones. Development of a website with near real-time global tropical cyclone collocated with SST. Development and production of OI SSTs. Development of a high-resolution sea ice algorithm for SSM/I and validation of sea ice from microwave radiometers. Studies of sea ice climate variability.

Research on error characterization for IR and MW SSTs using in situ observation, blending of IR and MW SSTs, skin bulk differences, the cool skin layer, and diurnal warming. Development of a physical model of diurnal warming with Dr. Peter J. Minnett.

Investigation of baroclinic instabilities with Dr. Rick Salmon and Dr. Myrl Hendershott. Numerical modeling of surface quasi-geostrophic flow over topography.

Investigated the effect of traveling atmospheric storms on TOPEX SSH, with Dr. Carl Wunsch and Dr. Detlef Stammer, to provide more accurate parameterization of the inverted barometer effect.
